12.5 lakhs students of private schools in Haryana go “missing”

Private schools in Haryana have recently submitted the shocking data to Education Department, which shows 17.31 lakh students were enrolled for the 2021-22 academic session as against 29.83 lakh last year. Over 12.5 lakh students of 8,900 private schools in Haryana have not applied for admission in the current academic session.

The Directorate of School Education (DSE) has expressed concern over the matter and said, “As many as 12.51 lakh students, who used to study in private schools, has not been updated on MIS (Management Information System). You are directed to hold meetings with heads/managements of private schools to get updated the data of these 12.51 lakh students so that the apprehensions of their dropping out can be minimised”

DSE further added, “However students, especially from rural areas, might have found it difficult to continue their studies. Further, a large number of people have lost their jobs during the pandemic.”
Haryana Education Minister Kanwar Pal Gurjar said, “I am shocked by the huge difference in the number of enrolled this year and will get the issue probed.”

It is believed that not only in Haryana but also in other states, students have not enrolled in the next academic year and shifted to government school over issue of fees, have less understanding in online classes. Some children have gone to their native places due to the ongoing pandemic, while others are under the general impression that they will be promoted without studying anything as per the new rule.
